THE NEW VIOLONE

The New Violone was born from the idea of giving voice to an instrument that has almost always exclusively been linked to the basso continuo. Whereas the violone was a very important instrument during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, little by little it fell by the wayside with hardly any original music being written for it.

Just as each person holds their own characteristic voice, so the violone has a unique and original sound within the string instrument group. It is stimulating to come back again to the wonderful music of Bach, Vivaldi, Fontana or Castello, but from this new sound. Transcription was customary at the time of these composers and one single piece of music might be interpreted with instruments so different as the organ, the harpsichord, the lute or the cello. This opening would lead us to question whether all music is in fact a transcription of an intangible idea, an ideal that we must build sound around with our own instrument, whatever it be.
